The Iniquity of the Fathers

I do not believe that we have anything to worry about the sins of our fathers presenting an obstacle to our own moral development.  If we are raised in the Word (meaning if our fathers and mothers read the Bible to us regularly and took us to a Bible believing church every Sunday), then there is anything to fear whatsoever.  Rather, we need to fear solely our own attitude, our own propensity to sin and our pride, out potential to refuse the offer of Christ, to repent and believer on Him.  This should be our sole concern.

Exodus, below, illustrates that God is concerned not with the sins of your fathers, but your own sins.

From Got Questions Dot Org:

Does God punish people for the sins of their fathers (or mothers)?  No. He does not. You can only be punished for your own sin. You do not need to worry that you may somehow "inherit" your parents' sins and then be punished for them.

The immediate context surrounding Exodus 34:7 show that God is concerned with that generation's sins of disbelief and idolatry. If there are pivotal periods in the history of The Chosen People (the Children of Abraham), then the reception of the Ten Commandments was clearly one pivotal incident.

It is true that we "inherit" sin tendencies from our parents, as well as from friends we spend considerable time with.

"Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners." (1 Cor. 15:33)

The instructions Ezekiel gives are paramount here:  "Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord God. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin. Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel? For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord God: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye." (Ezekiel 18:30-31 KJV)
